NSWOCs are specialized nurses. A Nurse Specialized in Wound, Ostomy and Continence (NSWOC) is a registered nurse with advanced and specialized knowledge and clinical skills in wound, ostomy and continence care who has graduated from a World Council of Enterostomal Therapists (WCET) recognized education program. Who are Nurses Specialized in Wound, Ostomy and Continence (NSWOCs)? NSWOCs are specialized nurses. A Nurse Specialized in Wound, Ostomy and Continence (NSWOC) is a registered nurse with advanced and specialized knowledge and clinical skills in wound, ostomy and continence care who has graduated from a World Council of Enterostomal Therapists (WCET) recognized education program. NSWOCs are CNA Certified. Recognized as Nurses who have specialized training in wound, ostomy and continence by the Canadian Nurses Association (CNA), NSWOCs are the ONLY nursing specialty with CNA certification in wound, ostomy and continence care (WOCC(C)). NSWOCs are across the continuum of care. From acute care hospitals, outpatient clinics, community, long term care and in independent practice, an NSWOC provides specialized holistic assessment and management as an interprofessional team member to meet the needs of individuals/families with ostomies, acute and chronic wounds and urinary and fecal continence problems. Urinary Catheter Decision Aids A series of 4 decision aids developed by NSWOCC in 2024. Feedback from Nurses Specialized in Wound, Ostomy and Continence, in 2020, following the launch of the Clean Intermittent Urethral Catheterization in Adults - Canadian Best Practice Recommendations for Nurses identified the lack of standardization in the use of urinary catheters across the health care spectrum. This identified a need for nursing decision aids to guide catheter selection and prompted the formation of a task force to develop standardized decision aids. A group of twenty-four nurses with expertise in the field of continence were drawn from relevant professional associations across Canada. The work of this expert group and the resulting four decision aids below provide a standardized approach to support nurses on appropriate catheter selection for intermittent and indwelling catheterization for patients of all ages. Grounded in a commitment to high standards, evidence-based practice, and professional leadership, the program celebrates individuals whose careers reflect exceptional and sustained contributions to clinical practice, education, research, and policy. Launched in May 2024, the Fellowship represents an important milestone for NSWOCC in acknowledging and honouring outstanding achievement while reinforcing a culture of excellence across the profession. About the NSWOCC Fellowship Program Fellowship is the highest honour bestowed by NSWOCC and is reserved for Nurses Specialized in Wound, Ostomy and Continence (NSWOCs) who have had a significant and measurable impact on advancing the specialty.
