Nurses Specialized in Wound, Ostomy and Continence Canada (NSWOCC) is proud to highlight the inspiring work of Amanda Sowiak, RN, BN, NSWOC, WOCC, a Nurse Specialized in Wound, Ostomy and Continence (NSWOC) and dedicated member of our Indigenous Wound, Ostomy and Continence Health Core Program.

Amanda serves as a Care Specialist and Educator with the Blood Tribe Nation Department of Health, working out of the Levern Clinic in Alberta. Her compassionate care and clinical expertise recently led to an incredible success story — a two-year healing journey for a client whose life was forever changed by her dedication.

The client suffered a severe foot infection after stepping on a nail while hunting, which developed into necrotizing fasciitis — a life-threatening condition that nearly cost him his limb. On the operating table, amputation seemed imminent, but the surgeon recognized a possibility to save the leg. Working closely with the care team, Amanda guided the complex wound care process and remained committed to the client’s healing journey every step of the way.

After two years of perseverance, the wound has now fully closed — a testament to Amanda’s expertise, compassion, and the impact of specialized nursing care in community and Indigenous health settings.
